The Golden Legacy of 'Olena

'Olena is the Hawaiian word for Turmeric

OUR 'OLENA JOURNEY

We founded 'ĀiNA CULTURE with a vision rooted in faith, hard work, and a deep desire to provide for our family. Our goal was simple: to raise our children with holistic values, nourish them with quality organic food, and experience the beauty of working the ‘Āina (land) together every day.

In 2016, we began cultivating ‘Ōlena and other tropical & canoe crops like Taro, in the rich soil of North Kohala on the Big Island.

On that year we had our first child and pregnant with our second child we planted our first 'Olena (turmeric) crop. In about an acre we harvested approximately 50,000 pounds of life changing medicine, and 10,000 pounds of taro.

From that very first harvest, we didn't just grow turmeric; we enjoyed it. We immediately began utilizing the entirety of the ‘Ōlena plant: the leaves, the flowers, and the stems. Integrating them into our daily lives.

Our kitchen became a laboratory of alchemy and health where we crafted our first Turmeric Elixirs, golden milks, salves, and even natural dyes for fabrics. As our children grew up in the fields, we became experts in the plant's life cycles and regenerative farming, cultivating a vibrant harvest. For many years we provided high quality turmeric to major organic companies like GT’s Kombucha and Garden of Flavor, our hearts were always in the small batches we shared with our 'ohana,  friends, neighbors, and visitors to the farm, showing the health benefits of the different varieties of turmeric we grow.

In 2024, that journey came full circle. While pregnant with our fourth child, our dream of a flagship product became a reality. The O.G. Blend Turmeric Elixir was born, the evolution of years of farming, family, and a mission to share the highest quality organic products to improve people's lives.

HISTORY OF 'OLENA IN HAWAI'I

'Olena/Turmeric was brought to the islands by Polynesian voyagers over a thousand years ago. This plants are called “canoe plants,” or "canoe crops" ʻolena traveled across the Pacific alongside other essential crops like taro, coconut, ulu (breadfruit), noni, sweet potato and more, these plants were chosen for their ability to nourish, heal, and sustain life.

In traditional Hawaiian culture, ʻolena was valued not only as a food, but also for its medicinal and ceremonial uses. It was used to support digestion, care for the body, and even as a natural dye due to its vibrant golden color.

Thriving in Hawai‘i’s rich volcanic soil and tropical climate, turmeric became deeply rooted in the islands, both in the land and in its cultural practices.

At 'ĀiNA Culture, we continue this legacy by growing turmeric in a way that honors its origins while supporting the health of both people and the ‘ĀiNA (land).

TURMERIC VARIETIES WE GROW

While we specialize in five distinct varieties of turmeric, they are part of a vast and incredible botanical family. Globally, there are over 100 identified species of turmeric, with more than 50 specific varieties of turmeric grown across the world.

While Curcuma longa is the most well known culinary species, turmeric is far from a "one size fits all" plant. Depending on where it is grown and the specific variety, turmeric differs greatly in:

Color: Ranging from snowy white and pale green to deep, vibrant orange and midnight blue.

Curcumin Concentration: This is the active compound that provides anti-inflammatory benefits, the reason we love our Hawaiian Red.

Medicinal Tradition: Each variety has been used by different cultures for thousands of years.

Hawaiian Red

The Heart of Our Blend

This is our personal favorite variety and the star of our Elixirs. Hawaiian Red is prized for its exceptionally high curcumin content. It has a deep, orange color, with a spicy but at the same time sweeter earthy richness that provides the potent anti-inflammatory foundation we all need and love.

Indira

The Golden Standard

Indira is the most beloved variety for traditional spices and curries worldwide. Originally famous in India, it has adapted beautifully to our Hawaiian climate. It offers that classic, robust "glow" and a balanced, peppery flavor that makes it the perfect all purpose turmeric.

White mango

The Culinary Gem

A true surprise for the senses! This variety doesn't taste like your typical spicy turmeric, it has a crisp, tart flavor and aroma exactly like a fresh green mango. It’s incredible in stir-fies, soups, or juiced alongside our Red and Indira varieties for a bright, tropical lift.

Green

Skin's Best Friend

Incredibly robust and vigorous in the field. Unlike the culinary types, it is prized for its antimicrobial and cooling properties. It has a beautiful, floral scent that makes it the perfect choice for topical salves, helping to soothe the skin and calm irritation.

Blue /
Black

The Ancient Healer

This rare variety is easily identified by its striking blue-purple interior. It has a powerful, camphor like aroma that feels very "clearing." Because of its unique essential oils, it is traditionally used in salves to support respiratory comfort and deep tissue relief.
